2025 Annual Progress Report

The Climate Change Authority’s fourth Annual Progress Report finds that Australia is making progress on emissions reduction, but more is needed to meet our targets and adaptation needs. Australia has committed to reducing emissions by 62–70% below 2005 levels by 2035. To stay on track, the rate of reductions must double in the 5 years to 2030 and triple in the decade to 2035. Achieving these goals will require coordinated efforts across government, industry and communities. The Authority recommends extending the Capacity Investment Schemes (CIS), a central pillar to delivering Australia's 82% renewable electricity target. Alongside the delivery of renewables, the Authority recommends investing in Australia's power system to ensure it remains stable as fossil fuel generators retire and cutting methane emissions so the country can meet its targets.
