The project will deliver an integrated package of adaptation interventions under two outcomes to address the root causes of vulnerability to climate change impacts associated with sea-level rise, Tropical Cyclones (TCs), saltwater intrusion and coastal erosion in at-risk coastal communities. The approach centres on a strong enabling environment for climate-resilient coastal protection as well as providing the funding needed to install NbSs in vulnerable sites. This financing of concrete adaptation action would enable communities to adapt to adverse climate impacts in the short-term and enhance their resilience in the long-term. This approach responds to vulnerabilities identified as a national priority and detailed at the local level in selected priority communities as described above. The project interventions will enhance resilience in target communities to ensure continued well-being and sustainable livelihoods without the need for relocation. Beyond the target communities, enhanced institutional capacity within the MoAW and other key stakeholders in extension structures will enable the upscaling of NbS approaches to coastal protection in other vulnerable sites across Fiji, providing support to additional communities that are not direct beneficiaries of concrete adaptation investments under this project. Climate change can have a range of impacts on technological system. Extreme weather events can cause infrastructure failures like power outages or damage to roads and bridges, as well as the impacts from waste following natural disasters. Human activities also cause technological impacts, such as the risks posed by oil spillage and leaks.

Any substance with chemical properties that can cause physical harm to people or damage the environment, including ammonia, carbon monoxide, phosphine, chlorine, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, pesticides, dioxins, microplastics, benzene, asbestos, aflatoxins, fluoride, methanol, and toxins from marine sources.

Climate change impacts our society by disrupting the natural, economic and social systems we depend on. Physical hazards and underlying vulnerabilities can lead to increased resource competition for food and water, which can heighten the risk of conflict.

Slow onset events evolve gradually from incremental changes over many years or from increased frequency or intensity of recurring events. As defined in the Cancun Adaptation Framework (2010), slow onset events include risks and impacts from rising temperatures, desertification, biodiversity loss, land and forest degradation, glacial retreat, ocean acidification, sea level rise, and salinization.

Heavy precipitation refers to any form of weather where substances fall from the sky, including rain, snow, sleet, or hail.

Geohazards are adverse geological phenomenon's that are capable of causing widespread damage or loss to property, life and the environment, such as earthquakes, volcano eruptions and tsunamis. Climate change can increase the frequency and severity of some geohazards, such as landslides, and soil erosion.
